It is said that demon king Ravana worshiped Bhagwana Shiva to gain invincible power during Treta Yuga. Hence, in order to please Lord Shiva, Ravana offered his total ten heads to Bhagwana Shiva. So lord Shiva was impressed with his religious deeds and granted him amazing power of immortality and invincibility. However, having attained such incomparable boon by Lord Shiva, he also requested lord to provide him Gold-made-Lanka. Moreover, Bhagwana Shiva took the form of a Shivalinga and asked Ravana to bring it to Lanka but also warned not put it on earth. However, while returning to Lanka, Ravana saw a shepherd and handed over Shivalinga to him. The shepherd could not bear the weight of Linga and put it on earth then the Linga itself installed on the ground. Hence, Linga got set up at this place as well as the same is also in Ardhanarishwar form which means Bhagwana in a form of Half female and Half male.
