Haryana Kapalmochan Temple
Kapal Mochan is also known as Gopal Mochan. It is situated about 17 km northwest of Yamuna Nagar. The devotees get rid of their sins by taking a dip in the sacred tank known as Rinmochan, Kapalmochan and Surya kund. Draupdi and Pandavas also visited this area with Mata Kunti after killing their relatives and Guru Dronacharya in Mahabharata; to get rid of their sins by taking a dip in this sacred tank. It is being said that Shri Ram and Shri Lakshman washed their weapons at this pond.
History
Kapal Mochan is an ancient place and it used to be the ‘Yagya Sthal’ of many Rishis. A great yagya was performed here in the beginning of Kalyug age by the holy and prominent Rishis of that time. When ‘Puran Ahuti’ was being performed, differences between Devata’s and Lord Shiva cropped up and Lord Shiva proceeded to Adi-Badri. Kapal Mochan is named after the washing away the sins of ‘Brahma Hatya’ of Lord Shiva. It was known earlier as ‘Somsar’.
The statue of Uma Mahadev made in 9th-10th century, and statue of Ganesha made in 11th-12th century and remains of Gupta period prove the antecedence of Kapalmochan.
Architecture
Kapalmochan pond has one statue of cow and calf in black and other in white because cow and calf washed away their sins of cruel Brahmin’s killing.
How To Reach
By Rail
Yamuna Nagar/Jagadhari is well connected by Northern Railways from two different Junctions namely Ambala and Saharanpur (UP). From Railway Station, pilgrims’ can avail taxi and auto rickshaw services to reach Kapal Mochan (Bilaspur).
By Road
Kapal Mochan Temple is well connected by Roads from Chandigarh, Ambala and Saharanpur sides via Yamuna Nagar/Jagadhari. Roadways Buses of nearby States ply on this rouet.
By Air
Kapal Mochan is not connected by Air. If any one wishes to visit by air, the nearby Domestic Air Ports are at Dehradun and Chandigarh, which can serve the transit point from IGI AirPort Delhi.
Local Transport
Local transports are available in the form of Taxis and Auto-rickshaws for Kapal Mochan from Bus stand.
Important Shrines
The four important tirathas situated near Kapalmochan are Adi-Badri, Mantra Devi Temple on top of hills, Kedar Nath where Lord Shiva had performed ‘Tapsaya’ and Saraswati Udgam Sthala, from where river Saraswati has originated and even to-day water is coming out from here without any source.
Significance Of The Temple
Its importance is evident from the fact that its name appears at numerous places in Mahabharata and Puranas. Kapal Mochan has been described as famous in all the three mythological worlds. It is the destroyer of all sins. The devotees get rid of sins by taking a dip in the sacred tank. Kapal Mochan is a natural hollow near the bank of Saraswati River.
This place was also visited by Guru Gobind Singh after the battle of Bhangani in 1679 AD on his way to Paonta Sahib and also washed weapons here.
Attractions
The well known fairs is held at Kapal Mochan on the last three days of Kartik Purnima in which people drawn from various parts of Northern India including Hindus, Sikhs and other religious communities take holly dip here for Moksha. It is believed that Lords of Hindus and Gurus of Sikhs had stayed here from time to time. The temple of Pandavas is still there in ‘Kapal Mochan’.

Best season to visit Kapal Mochan is October & November, February to May.

Yamuna Nagar /Jagadhari, being the only city near to Kapal Mochan Temple, can be chosen for accommodation. Yamuna Nagar has good and moderate hotels besides a number of Dharamshalas to suit for every visitor.
