Assam Uma Nanda Temple
It lies opposite to Kachari Ghat. It is one of the renowned Shiva temples in the state that attracts devotees or visitors towards it. This is the main reason thousands of devotees or pilgrims visit here everyday. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva, the destroyer and creator is living at the place as Bhayananda.
History
This temple was constructed by Gadadhar Singha, the Ahom king during 1681 to 1696. Gadadhar Singha was a committed Hindu Shaivaite at that time. The mountain area on which this sacred temple has been constructed is now known as Bhasmacala. According to legend, the Bhagwana Shiva resides at this place as Bhayananda. As per the sacred Kalika Purana, at the starting of universe creation, Lord Shivaji sprinkled sacred Bhasma or ashes here and imparted sacred knowledge to his consort Parvati. Moreover, according to Hindu myths, when Lord Shiva was doing meditation at this mountain area, Kamadeva, the sex God interrupted his meditation. Hence, being in anger Lord Shiva burnt Kamadeva, the sex God into ashes, that’s why this area called as Bhasmacala. However, this hill area also named Bhasmakuta. As per sacred Kalika Purana, sacred Urvasikunda is also located at this place; here lives Urvashi, the Goddess who brings nectar especially for the fun of Kamakhya that’s why the location also named Urvasi Island. However, the presiding sacred deity of this temple is sacred Uma Nanda. According to legend, if a person worship at this place on Monday during Amavasya, he or she will be blessed greatly by Lord Shiva. The Shiva Chaturdasi festival is greatly celebrated at this place that held every year.
Significance of The Temple
However, the original temple has been damaged by devastating of 1897 earthquake. But after sometime, a local rich merchant renovated or reconstructed it again.
The sacred temple has inherited stone cut sculptures that speak about the Assamese architecture and craftsmanship. The sacred sculptures in the temple display its religious significances.
How to Reach
By Air
If you want to reach at Uma Nanda sacred temple by using air transport then you can easily find various domestic flights to this area. Some of the nearest airports are including Borihar airport only 21 km, Shillong airport around 80 km and Salonibari airport about 132 km far from Guwahati city.
By Train
Rail or train transportation is an easy and fast transport-mode to reach at the sacred place. Some of the nearest railway stations are Guwahati railway station only 2 km, Agthori railway station around 7 km and Amin Gaon railway station about 8 km distance from Uma Nanda Temple.
By Road
Guwahati city is well linked with other parts of the state by developed roads. Hence, pilgrims or visitors can easily find road-transport such as government owned buses, private vehicles and cabs.
Other Transport
The renowned peacock island area can be reached out from Guwahati city and northern Guwahati town by ferries as well as steamers. Visitors or pilgrims can easily find ferry just from Bazar Ghat or Sukleshwar Ghat.

The climate of Guwahati is like all other parts of Assam state thus pilgrims can visit here throughout the year. However, the best time to visit Uma Nanda temple is festivals time especially in Shivaratri.
