Thiruvarur is a coastal district situated along the mid coastal line in Tamil Nadu. The district is surrounded by Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Karaikal districts and Bay of Bengal on the east. The area of the district is 2161 sq. km.

The district is located between North Latitude 10° 20' and 11° 07' East Longitude 79° 15' and 79° 45'. The district was earlier a part of Thanjavur district. A separate district on Thiruvarur was formed in the year 1997. The region was of great importance during the Chola rule in the 9th and 12th centuries AD. The place was annexed by the British in the year 1841 on the grounds of no heirs to the king.
