Theni district is a south western part of Tamil Nadu. The district was part of Madurai until the year 1996. Theni district shares its borders with Madurai, Virudhanagar, Dindigul districts of Tamil Nadu and Idukki district of Kerala. The district is located between 9˚ 30’ 00" and 10˚ 30’ 00" North Latitude and 77˚ 00, 00" and 78˚ 30’ 00” East Longitude. The total area of the district is 2889 sq. km.

The rivers that flow in Theni are Periyar river, Vaigai river, Mullai river, Kottagudi river, Varaganathi river, Suruliyar river, Manjalar river and Varattaru river. Agriculture in Theni is the main source of income. The produce includes sugarcane, cotton, millets, cereals, pulses, groundnut, gingelly, silk, banana, coconut, tea, coffee, cardamom, grapes, mangoes, etc. The district has a good share of forests.

• Vaigai Dam: The dam is constructed across river Vaigai, situated near Andipatti. The height of the dam is 111 feet. The place offers a beautiful garden which has earned the name Little Brindavan.
• Mavoothu: Mavoothu is famous for Vellappar Temple. The temple is situated in Varushanad hill ranges.
• Devadanapatti: This temple is situated near the banks of river Manjal near Devadanapatti. The diety is Kamatchi Amman or Kamakshi Devi.
• Periyakulam: Periyakkulam is one of the important towns in Theni district. The place is situated near Kodaikkanal. Mangoes produced here are very famous.
• Kumbakkarai Falls: These waterfalls are located in the foot hills of Kodaikkanal. The waterfalls are a natural source of mineral and herbs.
