Coimbatore district is one of the districts of Tamil Nadu State. It is the most prosperous district with the development of industrial activities. Coimbatore town is covered by the maximum portion of the district. Coimbatore city is the headquarters of the district.

It is surrounded by Erode district in the northeast and east, Nilgiris district in the north and Idukki district of kerala in the south and Dindigul district in the south east. Coimbatoe district is a division or a part of Kongu Nadu region. The total area of the district is covered up to 7,649sqkm.

The district was in the hands of many south Indian successful dynasties. It was Cholas who ruled Coimbatore in the 11th century whereas; today it is a jungle village under an Irula Chieftain. Later in 18th century it was taken up by Mysore from the Madurai rulers. Until the Independence of India, the district was occupied by the British.

In Coimbatore Tamil is the principal language. Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada speaking people are also seen. Coimbatore is the district that has a lot tourist attraction places such as, Siruvani Dam, Black Thunder (Water Sports), Kovai Kondattam, Valparai Hill Station, Aliyar Dam.
