Chennai district is one of the smallest districts in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The district does not have a headquarters. Geographically, large area of the Chennai city is covered by the district.

Chennai district is situated on the north-east of Tamil Nadu and surrounded Bay of Bengal and inland by the districts of Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram. The district stretches between 12° 9' and 13° 9' of the northern latitude and 80° 12' and 80° 19' of the southern longitude.

Earlier Chennai was known as Madras Patnam that was located in the province of Tondaimandalam. It is an area that is situated between the Nellore and Cuddalore of Panner River. Kancheepuram was the capital of this province. It was ruled in the 2nd century by Tondaiman Iiam Tiraiyan was a representative of Chola family.

Consequently many rulers came in and ruled the district. Later on Chennai Jagir or district of Chengalpattu was maintained by Army. Lord Macartney took the charge in the year 1781. At that period Chennai became a substantial Naval Base.

During the period of 19th century Sir Edward Elliot was a Governor of Chennai tried for the progression of literacy by introducing English education in Chennai and organized a body called Board of Public Instructions to improve and direct public education.

Later on in the first half of 19th century in Chennai several educational institutions and professional and technical education was being established and developed such as,

• Civil Engineering College in 1834
• The  Madras University was started in September 1857.
