Tuticorin Port
This port starts among the 12 ports that are considered as the major ports in India. Kochi International Container Transshipment Terminal, Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai and Chennai Port are the largest container terminals in India, the fourth largest container of India and the second largest port of Tamil Nadu is the Tuticorin Portand on 11th July 1974 it was officially declared.Being an artificial port it has made a record of allowing traffic of around 10 million tons to pass through it from April to September in the year 2008. This further recorded a12.08% increase in the growth rate. This record has surpassed the record that has been made in the previous years and has handled 8.96 million tons. The services to the various countries like US, China and few other countries are provided through this port.
History
For centuries it has been the epicenter for maritime tradeas well as pearl fishery. This has been a natural harbor that has very opulent hinterland stimulated and thus has enhanced in the progress of the port. Originally it was piled with the wharfs made of wood and later with the iron screw. This port is named as the minor quay in the year 1868.
The trade through this port increased with the passing years so the Indian government endorsed an amount for the development of the port to increasethe profits to India. It has been acknowledged as one of the major port of India and was ranked 10thon July 11, 1974. Erstwhile Tuticorn was considered as the port that is minor and the lately developed it was a port that was considered a major were then clubbed on 1st April 1979 and thus the Tuticorn Port Trust established it as Major Port Trusts Act that was in the year 1963.
Location
The port is on the south-eastern shore in the Tuticorn district that is almost 600 km form the south of Chennai. The location of the port provides it many pros since it is very close to East-West international sea route and is just 125 nautical miles away.
Construction
This is a deep-sea imitated harbor that is made from the rubble mound-type parallel piersjutting into the sea that is approximately 4 km. It has a north pier that is 4099 meters long and in the south it is 3873 meters long and thus the two breakwaters are 1275 meters apart from each other. The harbor is lined with the 2400 meters lengthy and 183 meters wide channels and is surrounded by the water area that moves upto 400 hectares.
Facilities
This port is capable of handling both the vessels and voyage ships and is looked by the PSA Sical. For the economic growth of India and south of Tamil Nadu the port acts as its backbone because of its strategic location. This port has also the capacity to knob upto 7%of the container traffic of India and therefore is the cause of the major investment for the southern district of Tamil Nadu. There are two container wharfs on the port that are 370 meter in length and is 10.9 meter in depth. This port is therefore considered equivalent to Colombo port that has 15 meter deep. The Trust of Tuticorin Port hasplanned to invest aroundan amount of one billion dollars for the progression of the port. The development of the port is planned to be completed in 2 phases. In the first phase the plans is to deepen the harbor upto 12.8 meters in the depth and during the second phase it will be increased to another 14.5 meters. Other than expanding the outer dock there has been a proposal to develop the moles and then increasing the length of the channel that is approaches.The port is capable of handling vessels that are up to 245 meters long. Keeping the large vessels thus restricts the booking that can be eradicated and thus reducing the transshipment to the Colombo port. Because of its geographical location this harbor has the capabilities to be named as a global container transshipment pivot. In the last five decades the activities on the port increased at a growth of 17%. The privatization of the port thus helped for the bigger operation like handling of the containers for the first by the PSA Sical. There has been a proposal for making another container terminal at this port. The port is capable of being called as a gateway from South of India to many countries like United States of America, the Mediterranean etc. countries by having direct sailing to these countries. The percentage ratio of exports to these countries are as follow 25 percent to Europe, US has 20 percent , East Asian countries that includes China have 20 percent, Colombo has 15 percent, West Asia has 10 percent and the balance export is for the Mediterranean countries.
Naval Base
Plannings have also been to develop a naval base here with the realm of Naval Command that are part of the Eastern are to scrutinize the Gulf of Munnar and to defend the possibilities of any belligerence in the near areas andofficials of theTuticorin Port Trust have allocated a plot that is 24-acre.A ferry ride has been started fromTuticorin to Colombo to attract tourist.
International Services
- It is the port in the southern India that only has the facility of providing direct vessel service to the United States on the weekly basis with the passage time of 22 days.
