Cuddalore Port
The union of the Gadilam and Paravanar River marks the existence of Cuddalore Port that is at a Lat. of 110 43N and Long. 79049 East. At the initiation of the junction of the river is a bar and has a depth of 5 to 6 feet at low water.The water level is maintained at about 3 to 4 feet in months of July to September.All the cargo is loaded and unloaded here and the ships anchor at a mile from the coast.
The port is located in the East coast of Tamil Nadu in Bay of Bengal and this is an open berth port at the concourse of river Uppanar and Paravanar.The ships are hooked and the unloading or loading of cargo is done at the open sea. The berth is 8-10m in depth and is mostly at the 0.5 Nautical mile.An amount of almost Rscrore is spent at the refurbishment of the port. The work of refurbishment includes the strengthening of levee, the lights, unearthing of Upannar River and the approaching road to deck. After the completion of refurbishment of the port it has been safely used for all kinds of cargo work. There has been a tender for the developing the PPP mode Port for which there has been many bids submitted.
Location
The port is in the South of Pondicherry at 25 km and South of Chennai at 180km at a Lat 11O42’N and Long 79O46’E.
Channel Depth
At the congruence of Upannar and Paravanar Rivers is the Port Cuddalore. The reformation of the port includes the unearthing of Uppanar River which was costed around Rs. 4 Crores which made an ark from Nose point to Jetty at the required depth.During the low tides the depth of water at the port is 2.5 to 3 meters. The depth at the quay is 4 meter.
Connectivity
Road
The port is well connected through NH 45A and is 1 km away of the East Coast Road. The RCC road connectivity leads to the port.
Rail
The Broad Gauge is about 1.5Km from the port. The work for the connectivity to port is almost completed from the main line to Chennai and a chord line from port to Trichy.
Wharf
The port is capable of handling the General cargo, edible oils, chemical, coal etc can be unloaded that is in bulk. The highly illuminated and fully fortified jetties are available after the refurbishment of 1132.4 meters.
Open Stacking Area
An amassing area is provided on the northern side of Uppanar levee which is 18 Acres. Another 45 Acres of land is available at the southern side of Paravanar waterfront.This area also serves as a well connectivity for the multipurpose cargo movement. The port has been surrounded by vast piling area which helps in storage of numerous cargos.
Lighters/Barges
The dory are available that can hold capacity of 250T/400T that can be either liquid or dry. These all are privately owned. The port has made a record and has proved that it can hold a cargo of 5000T per day.
Port Working Hours
Being a haven port the normal operating hours of the port are from 6 to 18 hours. The night operations are considered after considering all the weather conditions.There are a nominal M.O.T charges levied for working beyond the decided working hours.
