Jalore district was earlier known as Jabalipur that derived from sacred glove of sage Jabali. As the time passed, Jalore was also called by the names of Kanchangiri and Swarngiri.

It was believed that the fort of Jalore was built by Parmars rulers. The kingdom was captured by the Chauhans in 1181. In 1311, the kingdom of Jalore was destroyed by Allauddin Khilji. The region came under the rule of Palampur, Gujarat. Later on, it came under the Moghal rule and in 1700s it was merged with Marwar where it remained until Indian independence in 1947.

Jalore district is located in the southwest part of Rajasthan State. It is situated in the North western border of Barmer, North eastern boundary is shared with Pali, in the south east of Sirohi and in south the border of Gujarat State comes in. Jalore district is a part of Luni Basin. Jawai, Khari, Sagi, Bandi and Sukdi rivers are the tributaries of Luni that form the flow of network. The district has obtained 13th place in respect to the area.

The district is rich in irrigation of variety of crops sown and produced that are:

The total area of the district is covered up to 10566km. whereas; 423.95 sq km of area is covered with reserved forest, protected forest and unclassified forest.
