South Western
Of the sixteen railway zones in India, the South Western Railway (SWR) is one such headquartered at Hubli. SWR is made up of Bangalore, Mysore divisions (both were earlier part of the Southern Railway). The Hubli division (of which Hospet and Bellary were a part) of the South Central Railways (SCR) were reorganized for administrative ease.
The division came into existence on April 1, 2003 and services Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and parts of Tamil Nadu.
The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) which boasts several unique technological innovations administers the new west coast railway line. Trains carrying the logos of both KRCL and SWR run on this line operated by Konkan Railways which points to their possible merger soon. Just as the Darjeeling train ride offers breathtaking Himalayan vistas, KRCL/SWR too offers several such scenic views of the coast especially around Mangalore, a major city on the west coast in Karnataka.
