Rules for Break Journey
For the convenience of the passengers Indian railway provides break journey for the distance more than 500km. Passengers are allowed to break journey once for two days at any station.
Passengers who reserved tickets for more than 500km are allowed to break their journey once for two days at any station they like. But this service will be available only after the passenger crossed 500th km. For more understanding assume the ticket is for more than 1000km then the passenger will be permitted to break the journey twice. While calculating the number of eligible days for first break, the day of departure and day of arrival should not be taken in account of calculation. The ticket must be sanctioned by the station manager or ticket collector at station where the break is to be taken. For more details and information go through the particulars given below
NOTE :
- Special trains like Rajdhani, Shatbadi and Jan shatbadi express does not allow the facility of break journey.
- Break journey is not allowed very near to the destination station where reservation has been done.
- The break journey stations should be mention at the time of reservation and it is not allowed once obtained reservation.

If a passenger gets off from train and catching a connecting train will not be considered as break journey provided such halt is for less than 24 hours. For example a passenger holds a direct ticket from Pune to Jammu Tawi through Dadar, breaks his/her journey in Bombay by any day train and caches Bombay-Jammu Tawi Express next day morning will not be considered as break journey.
Note:
- The special express trains like Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express and Jan shatabdi express does not allow break journey because it have separate inclusive price structure on point-to-point basis. So refund on these express is also not allowable.
- As the tickets contain station code, station master’s initial with date it is advisable to keep if safe and protected.
Breaking journey without proper endorsement as considered as passenger travelling without proper ticket and it is offense as per rules and regulations - Passengers taking the break journey on the route except as provided in paragraph (1) above ought to surrender their tickets at the station where journey is about to broke. The money for the untraveled part will be given as refund in special circumstances only subject to the condition laid down by the rule 213, 4.
- Passengers are not allowed to break the journey nearby the destination station. If the passenger needs break journey then the name of the stations should be clearly mentioned on the Requisition form where the break journey was about to take. Reservation in this case will be done up to only break journey station.
