Rail Wheel Factory Yelahanka
Rail Wheel Factory referred as RWF at Yelahanka, Bangalore, of the Indian Railways is the primary manufacturing unit producing wheels, axles and wheel sets used in the Indian Railways and for exports. It was commissioned in 1984 by Prime Minister to manufacture wheels and axles for the Indian Railways Earlier more than 55% of the requirement of wheels, axels and wheel sets of the Indian Railways was imported. The Rail Wheel Factory Yelahanka was set up to reduce these expensive imports and provide cheaper and better indigenous options.
Thus a state-of the-art plant with a planned capacity to manufacture 70,000 wheels of different sizes, 23,000 axles and to assemble 23,000 wheel sets .was set up at Bangalore in Karnataka. The excess capacity was to be used for export and for private users..There are many unique features incorporated in the processes specially to thwart wastages and bring down costs of raw materials. Using Information Technology fully to its advantage with the latest MIS to plan and control production, the Rail Wheel Factory is one of the most modern and technologically up-to-date manufacturing facility as compared to similar units.
With a workforce of over 2000, inspite of automation of most processes, RWF has an annual turnover of about Rs. 82 crores. It is an ISO 9001: 2000 and ISO 14001 certified unit for its business processes.
