There are five divisions of the Northeast Frontier Railway. They are:
- Alipurdaur Railway Division
- Katihar Railway Division
- Lumding Railway Division
- Rangiya Railway Division
- Tinsukia Railway Division
History:
The North Eastern Railway was formed by the merger of Assam Railway with Oudh and Tirhut Railways on 14 April 1952. This was further divided into two railway zones on 15 January 1958; North Eastern Railway and the Northeast Frontier Railway.
Present Status & Progress
The Northeast Frontier Railway operates in the most difficult topography which is also incomparable in natural beauty. The progress in the expansion and modernization of this part of the rail network has been slow due to these geographical limitations. Presently, out of the seven Northeastern states only Assam has a decent rail network. The network is not completely broad gauge with very old rail lines that are so obsolete that at some places train speeds cannot go over a maximum of 30 km/h (19 mph).
The Saraighat Bridge is the first rail cum road bridge to be built over the river Brahmaputra. The construction of the bridge started in 1958 and was completed in 1962. It was opened to passenger traffic by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on June 7, 1962 bringing in a new dawn in the progress of the region.
With the construction of the Saraighat Bridge rail passengers need not get down to cross the river Brahmaputra by ferry across to Pandu Junction resume journey. Work is in progress to convert most tracks to Broad Gauge and to electrify the Katihar-Guwahati line.
The Northeast Frontier Railway connects the region to all major cities and towns of India. Some of the prominent passenger trains operated by the Northeast Frontier Railway Zone:
