North Western Railway
History
North Western Railway was formed on October 1, 2003 as one of the sixteen railway zones of Indian Railways with headquarters at Jaipur. It was carved out of the former Northern Railway and Western Railway and consists of four divisions: Jodhpur amd Bikaner divisions from the former Northern Railway and Jaipur and Ajmer divisions of the former Western Railway. Historically, the Jaipur Division was formed from the merger of Jaipur State Railway with Rajputana Malwa Railway and parts of BB & CI Railway. Serving the state of Rajasthan, parts of Gujarat and Haryana, the North Western Railway covers 5449.29 route km and 6559,5 track kms It has a mix gauge (2575.03 kms broad gauge and 2874.23 kms metre gauge) and 578 stations.
Present Status
North Western Railway has good freight traffic carrying fertilizer, cement, oil, salt, food grains, lime stone and gypsum in the Jaipur Division, china clay, gypsum and food grains from Bikaner Division, lime stone, salt and gypsum from Jodhpur Division and cement rock phosphate, soap stone powder from Ajmer Division. Since a lot of handicraft export takes place from Rajasthan, container loading on freight trains is done from Jaipur. A large number of passenger Mail/ Express trains connect the region with almost all major cities and towns of India. More than 50 Computerized Passenger Reservation Centers function from all the divisions for ease and convenience of passengers. More Computer Reservation Centers are being commissioned in interior areas like Ratangarh, Mahendragarh and others for passenger benefit. The number of stations in this zone located in all four divisions is 600.
There are many places of historical and cultural interest in Rajasthan bringing in large tourist traffic. Places like Jaipur, Udaipur, Ajmer Sharief, Pushkar, Jain Temples Dilwara at Mount Abu and Ranakpur Temples are very popular on the tourist map. The strength of the workforce for this zone is 45012.
