Mail Trains
When the postal service in India depended completely upon the Railways to carry Mail across the length and breadth of the country, Mail trains were an integral part of this system. They also carried Passengers and sorting of mail was carried out in one Mail Coach as mail was collected from and delivered at all stations the train passed.
With the decline of the postal system and the Rail Mail Service, this role of Mail trains has become redundant. While the nomenclature remains unchanged for old trains there are no more new Mail Trains. The cost of travel on Mail trains is more than Passenger trains.
Express Trains
The Express Trains are fast trains that stop at fewer stations. They are more expensive than Mail trains because of the ‘Express’ charge levied. They can be day or night trains.
