Konkan Railway
Connecting the coastal cities of Mumbai and Mangalore is this 760 kms of rail route of the Konkan Railway that travels over very difficult terrain of the tough Sahyadri Mountains, rivers, forests and valleys on the narrow Konkan strip on the west coast of India.
The construction of this long awaited Railway is considered to be an engineering feat made possible by the technical skills, discipline, dedicated effort of the entire team and the sacrifices they made which were way above their call of duty and that too in a record time of only four and a half years.
Until the Konkan Railway started its operations, the two important port cities of Mangalore and Mumbai were not directly connected by the railway network. Even though economic reasons provided a strong need to connect these two cities, the region through which the railway track had to pass was geographically very tough and would be an engineering challenge.
Project
Started in 1966, a line was constructed between Diva near Mumbai and Apta in Raigad district and extended up to Roha in 1986, mainly to serve the industries located in the area. Still there was a long way to go from Roha to Mangalore.
In 1984 the Railway Ministry started the final survey for the main coast portion from Mangalore to Margaon and then to Roha to be conducted by the Southern Railway. The survey report was submitted in 1986. In 1990 a separate Railway Company was incorporated to construct and run this route. Thus Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. was incorporated as a Public :Limited Company with head office at Belaput in Navi Mumbai and E. Sreedharan as the first Chairman and Managing Director.
Challenges
The impossible task of completing this project in 5 years was taken up as a challenge. The task was formidable because the project was the biggest and perhaps most difficult railway undertaking during this century and involved building over 2,000 bridges and 91 tunnels through the Sahyadri Mountains a very unfriendly terrain. Other major issue was land acquisition.
There were more challenges posed by nature such as. flash floods, landslides and tunnel collapses and because of thick forests in the region, wild animals also terrorized at construction sites.
As sections of the route got ready, services began so that the region got the benefit of the Konkan Railway without further delay. Finally services on the entire line commenced after a formal inauguration of the full stretch Mumbai to Mangalore on January 26, 1998,
Instead of divisions Konkan Railway has two regions with headquarters at Ratnagiri and Karwar.. The Ratnagiri region extends over 380 kilometres (240 mi) from Roha to Sawantwadi in Maharashtra, while the Karwar region extends over 360 kilometres (220 mi) from Pernem, Goa to Thokur in Karnataka.
The route is single track broad gauge with parts running parallel to Southern Railway tracks making it double track at these places. Both passenger and freight traffic runs on this route. Some important trains that run on this route are:
