East Central Railway
History
The Indian Railways were reorganized in 1996-1997 into 16 zones from the earlier nine zones. East Central Railway came into existence during this reorganization. The inauguration of the East Central Railway took place on September 08, 1996 and an Officer on Special Duty of the rank of General Manager was posted to look after the working of the zone.
East Central Railway has its headquarters in Hajipur in Bihar. Hajipur in Vaishali District is the district headquarters and is only about 25 kms from Patna, the Capital of Bihar by road and 200 kms by rail
Jurisdiction
Since the East Central Railway was carved out of the North Eastern Railway and the Eastern Railway, it has jurisdiction over Sonepur and Samastipur divisions which were under the jurisdiction of North Eastern Railway and Dhanbad, Danapur and Mughalsarai divisions which were under the jurisdiction of Eastern Railway before the reorganization.
The functioning of East Central Railway started only after the temporary Zonal Office Building was constructed and the core group of Officers and staff appointed in June 1997.
