Diesel Locomotive Works
The Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh is a production facility owned by the Indian Railways to manufacture diesel-electric locomotives, ancillaries and spare parts that are required by the Railways.
About the Company
Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) at Varanasi came into being in 1961 and the first locomotive from this Unit rolled out in 1964. It manufactures locomotives which are variants based on the original ALCO designs of the 1960s and the GM EMD designs of the 1990s. The annual production capacity of Diesel Locomotive Works is 150 locomotives with future plans to increase to 200 locomotives based on current demand.
The power outputs of DLW locomotives range from 2,600 horsepower (1,900 kW ) to of 4,000 horsepower (3,000 kW) The Unit manufactures EMD GT46MAC and EMD GT46PAC locomotives under license from Electro-Motive Diesels (formerly GM-EMD) for Indian Railways.
Apart from manufacturing diesel locomotives for the Indian Railways, Diesel Locomotive Works has the distinction of exporting locomotives to other countries such as Germany, Bangladesh, Mali, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania, Angola and Vietnam and also to a few private users within India, such as large power plants.
