Chittaranjan Locomotive Works
Chittaranjan Locomotive Works is one of the largest manufacturer of Electric Locomotives in the world. It is located near the Mihijam railway Station in Bardhaman District in the state of West Bengal.
Named after the great Indian freedom fighter, leader and statesman Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, the facility was founded in 1947 , the production of locomotives and ancillaries started on 26th anuary 1950, India’s First Republic Day.Beginning with steam locomotives prevalent at the time, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works manufactured 2351 steam locomotives between 1950 and 1972. On November 1, 1950 the first steam engine produced indigenously was dedicated to the freedom fighter
Chittaranjan Das by President Rajendra Prasad. The production of Steam engines was completely stopped in 1973.
After 1968, the facility started manufacturing diesel hydraulic locomotives. The production of these was also stopped in 1994 when these engines became redundant.
It now manufactures various types of electric locomotives such as 25 kv ac loco with three phase AC drive, 25kv AC locomotive with DC drive. Other than locomotives Chittaranjan Locomotive Works also manufactures AC & DC Traction motors, Switch gears/Control gears, coaches, cast & fabricated Wheel sets & Steel casting.
This is the only Government owned production facility to produce electric locomotives. The raw materials iron and steel are obtained from Asansol, Jamshedpur and the power from the Maithon Dam Hydel Power Project.
