The district was formed in 1948. Sangrur city founded by one Sanghu, a Jat, some 400 years back. So it derived its name. the headquarters for the district is the city of Sangrur. the area of the district extends upto 5021 sq. kms.

Four seasons make up a single year in the district. The hottest month is June when the temperature can soar as high as 40 degrees Celsius. The coldest months are January and February. Temperatures as cold as 7 degrees Celsius are recorded in winters.

Gurpurbs are celebrated with grandeur across the district. Janmastami festival of the district holds a very special significance. A Baisakhi fair is celebrated in Nankaina Sahib. 'Jor Mela Mastuana Sahib’ mela is organized in February to honour Sant Baba Attar Singh, who played a significant role in the education of the masses in the district.

Archaeological excavations in the district date the district back to the Harappan and Mahenjodaro civilization. The people of the Sangrur District were under the direct controlled by the Phulkian Chiefs who were allies to the British. This strengthened the fighters to take part in the national freedom struggle.

Ahmedgarh, Akoi, Badrukhan, Bagrain, Badnala, Banaur etc are few places of tourist importance.
