Gurdaspur district is the northern district of the state of Punjab. Its headquarters is located at Gurdaspur city. The district is named after its founder Guriya Ji, who lived in the 17th century.

Gurdaspur district is at the foot of the Himalayan mountains and spans across an area of 3562 sq. Kms. Rivers Ravi and Sutlej travel along the district on either sides. The district receives an average rainfall of 875.4 mm, for five years.

Chil pine, Shisham, kikar prosopis, eucalyptus, mango, mulberry, orange, Kinnow Lemon tree etc are cultivated in the district. The hilly terrain in the district is home to many minerals like building stones, foundry sand, gold calc-tuff, lime stone, ochre, salt petre fullers-earth, boulders shingle, sand, brick earth, etc,.

The ancient history of the place is much less known, but archeological evidence suggests that this place was visited by Alexander in his conquest on India and fought with the Kathaians at Sangala. On 14th Feb 1556, Emperor Akbar’s enthronement ceremony was performed by Bairam Khan at Kalanaur in the district. The Ranjit sagar dam and the Shahpur kandi project are the chief producers of electricity in the district.

The Mahakaleshwar temple in Kalanaur is distinct for being the only temple with a horizontal Shiva Linga. Pandori Mahantan is famous for its Baisakhi fair. The Chhinjh Mela is organized for wrestlers at Babehali.
