Sambalpur, is one of the western districts in Odisha. The district lies 20° 40’ N and 22° 11’ N latitude, 82° 39’ E and 85° 15’ E longitude and has a total area of 6,702 Sq. Km. The district is bordered by Deogarh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundergarh, Subarnapur and Angul districts.

In 4th century, the then King of Sambalpur, Mahendra of Koshala was defeated by Samudragupta. In the subsequent centuries the region came under the rule of Sarbhpuriyas. In the 7th century, the place was being ruled by Trivaradeva of Panduvamsi dynasty. Later on Gandas started ruling this place.

During the 14th century, Ramai Deva of the Chauhan dynasty gained power over this region. The Chauhan rule lasted until 1800. The kingdom fell into the hands of the Marathas. The British were also occupying Orissa. Sambalpur became an excuse to fight them. The fight resulted in the Marathas loosing the war and the British occupying Sambalpur. Sambalpur was occupied as the king died without an heir to the throne.
