Mayurbhanj, is the northern most district in Odisha. The district is the largest district in Odisha in terms of area. The total area of the district is 10,418 sq. km. and is situated between 21°16' and 22°34' North latitude and 85°40' and 87°11' East longitudes.

The district was Princely State of Mayurbhanj. The district shares its borders with Midnapore of West Bengal, Singbhum of Jharkhand, Balasore, Keonjhar districts of Odisha. Some of the minerals that are found in Mayurbhanj include Iron-ore, Galena, Kyanite, asbestos, Steatite and quartzite.

Mayurbhanj is home to some lush green forests. The vegetation spread in this district includes Sal forests, semi-evergreen forests, hill forests, dry Sal forests, plain Sal forests, grasslands and savannah. The place is also famous for Simipal National Park which is home to many animals such as tiger, elephant, cheetal, sambar, muntjac, leopard, mouse deer, chowsingha, barking deer, ruddy mongoose, pangolin, giant squirrel, flying squirrel, languor, macaque, etc.

Some of the places of tourist interest in Mayurbhanj are Lulung, Nawana, Joranda waterfall, Barehipani waterfall, Chahala, etc. One of the famous temples in this place is Shri Shri Haribaldev Mahaprabhu at Barpida.

A dance form indigenous to the place called Chhau dance can be seen here. This is a very special dance in which the artist or the dancer uses a mask. The mask is called Chaya or Chhau as it is called locally. This is how, it is believed the name of the dance came into being.
