Jajpur district is located in the state of Orissa. It extends between 200.30’ – 210.10’ N Latitude and 850.40’ – 860.44’ E Longitude. It gets its name from the Name of its headquarters, Jajpur. Jajpur city was founded in the 10th century AD by a Somavamsi King of the area, Jajati Keshari.

The area of the district is 2887 sq. kms. Baitarani, Kani,Kharasrota, Budha, Badagenguti, Brahmani, Kelua and Birupa are the chief water bodies that traverse the land in this district. The climate in the district is normal and it experiences all the seasons. The maximum temperature in the district is 38 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is 12 degrees Celsius. Average rainfall in the district is 1014.5 mm.

References to the area can be traced to historical books like the Mahabharatha and Ramayana. It is described that the five Pandava brothers (Yudhisthira, Bheema, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva) visited this place.

Buddhism and Jainism is still current in this part. Records of the Chinese traveller mention of such existence from the 8th century at the least. Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu also stayed here for few days while he was on his entourage across various places.

The Baruni mela is very famous in the district. It is celebrated every year at the Dasawamedha Ghata, when 10 to 12 lakh people take holy bath in the river Viraja.
