Ganjam district is located in Orissa. It derived its name from its head quarters city Ganjam. The city Ganjam was an Old Township and European fort (Gan-i-aam means Granary of the World). Historical facts have revealed that the city is as old as King Ashoka’s time i.e. 261 BC.

The geographical area of the district is 8070.60 square kms. The land in the district can be classified as the east coastal plains and the west hills and table lands. To the extreme north of the district is Lake Chilika.

Most soil in the district is alluvial and black cotton soil is found at few places. Agriculture is the chief occupation of the people in the area. paddy, Ground Nut, Sugar cane, Oil Seeds, Ragi, Mung, Biri etc. are cultibated in the district. The area experiences winter season from December to February, Summer season from March to May, and monsoon June to September. The average rain fall is 1444 mms. May is the hottest month and December is the coldest month.

The district is famous for its resources of abrasives and grinding materials, line stone (kankar), manganese, monazite, sand, talc, etc. Dola yatra, Thakurani Yatra, etc are famous celebrations in the district.
