The district was formed on 2nd January 1994. It was named after its headquarters Boudh city. Its area is 3444 sq.kms.

Boudh was once a Buddhist centre. It is centrally located in Orissa. Boudh is irrigated by river Mahanadi and its tributaries. The economy of the district is agrarian. Historical records date this district back as early as the 8th century. Its earliest known ruler was Nattabhanja of the Bhanja dynasty.

The district is located between Latitudes 20°.22’ to 20°.50’N and Longitudes 83°.34’ to 84°.49’E. the area is highly influenced by the Kosali culture. Karma dance, Dandai dance, Dalkai dance are famous dance forms in the district.

The Buddha statue, the Ramanth temples, the Yogindra Villa palace, the Chandrachuda and Matangeshwari temples, the Bairabhi and Madanmohan temple, Debagarh, Jagati are among the many places of tourist interest in the district. Marjakud is an island on the Mahanadi river and it serves as a nice picnic spot. Even the Satakosai gorge on both sides of the Mahanadi is a place of lush greenery on either sides and is a great place for ecotourism.

Chuda Khai Jatra, Ratha Yatra, Laxmi Puja, Nau Khai, Shiv Ratri are among the many festivals celebrated across the district. The world famous Jagannatha Ratha Yatra festival is celebrated in the district and it is the biggest festival in the world in terms of congregation of pilgrims at a single place.
