Anandabazar Patrika is a daily Bengali newspaper, which is published in Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata by the Group of ABP. As per Audit Bureau of Circulations, this newspaper has a propagation of 1028 million of copies, thereby making it the greatest circulation in the country. As per Indian Readership Survey 2012, this newspaper is the most preferred Bengali newspaper in the country. It has readership of about 58.59 lakhs. Hence, this newspaper has become the top newspaper for Bengalis in India. The chief rival of this newspaper is Bartaman Patrika. It enjoys the second rank by readership and circulation. Besides Kolkata, this newspaper is also printed from several other cities of West Bengal state. Prafulla Chandra Sarkar, an editor, laid the foundation of this newspaper in the year of 1922. Currently, Aveek Sarkar edits this paper.
It was first published on March 13th 1922 as an evening daily. This day was very pious day of Holi, which is called as Dol in the language of Bengali. Earlier, this was printed with red ink and contained four pages. Later, the number of pages was increased to six. In the year of 1923, it was converted into a morning daily, as it is published nowadays. In the year of 1923, a bi-weekly, chiefly called as Anandabazar, was published for the readers belonging to suburban areas. Thereafter, in the year of 1925, this newspaper became a 16 page format. Its Saturday section known as ‘Shanibarer Chithi’ and the section of Sunday ‘Rabibasariya’ came into existence in the year of 1925. The section of ‘Robibasorio’ comes even now with the same name, though supplement of Saturday has rechristened its name to ‘Patrika’. In the year of 1926, the first issue of festival, known as Puja special, was published as Sharadiya Sankhya. It is still published. In the year of 1940, a section of the children, named as ‘Anandamela’ came into limelight. In the year of 1960, a section of the entertainment, compiled of news of movie, known as ‘Anandalok’ came into existence. In the year of 1965, the language of this newspaper to the colloquial language of Bengali, though editorial remained to be printed in the formal language of Bengali. This newspaper got peculiar honours when the report of the Press commission proclaimed it to be the highest propagated paper in India. In the year of 1984, the publication of Patrika was stopped for 51 days because of the strike. In the year of 2009, the edition of internet of this paper was introduced. Its three prominent editions are published from metropolitan towns of India. These towns are Mumbai, New Delhi and Calcutta. Apart from this, this paper has divided the state of Bengal into six segments. Tabloids are also issued four times a week for city of Kolkata as well as its suburban areas. The edition of this newspaper is also available on the Internet. The supplements of this paper are Saturday supplement, Rabibasario, and Sunday supplement. Rabibasario consists of pages for children, which is chiefly called as Anandamela. The other supplements of this paper are Prastuti, which is published every Monday and Kajer Bazar, which is published every Tuesday. Apart from this, the editions of this paper carry peculiar supplements for the certain place from where they are published. This paper also consists of comic strips of
Mandrake and Phantom, which are circulated from of Monday to Saturday. It also publishes a peculiar festive issue, Sharadiya during the celebration of Durga Puja.
The chief competitor of this newspaper is Bartaman. This newspaper is being circulated since the year of 1984. Baraman enjoys the second rank after this newspaper in the state of West Bengal as far as circulation and readership is concerned. Its other rivals are Newz bangal, Ekdin, Sakalbela, Ganashakti, Aajkaal and Sangbad Pratidin. According to Audit Bureau of Circulations, the total circulation of this paper is about 12, 77,801. According to National readership survey, the readership of this paper was nearly 72, 95.000.
