Shivalik Fossil Park Saketi
The Shivalik Fossil Park situated at Saket that is the small village situated about 14km in the south direction of Nahan and near about 5km from the Kala Amb’s industrial town which is the border of the two states Himanchal Pradesh and Haryana. This park is really remarkable attraction of this state. This is the only park of Asia that has been established on the site where the fossils were found in actual. This park is in Saketi and is located about 14 km distance from Nahan that is the headquarter of Sirmaur Himachal Pradesh. This is the fossil site where the preservation of the Shivalik fossils has been done and also the renovation fossils and the environment of the Sivalik Hills. All the models of the fossils are made up of resins and the fibre glass. The models are of some selected mammals of Shivalik. All these fossils are developed in order to create scientific interest among the people and also for the scholars who visits this park for studies and research coming from various parts of the world. The inauguration of this park was done in 1974 that exhibits the life of various primitive animals that were living during the time that is about 1-2.5 millions of years ago. All the remains of these fossils have been extracted and found from Saketi and its surrounding areas. Many stunning fossil variety is of vertebrates and have been exhibited in the park in a small museum. This site has also been developed in order to give a look of Plio-Pleistocene period means about 2.5 million yrs ago through enormous forestation that is providing the green canopy in the park and leading to enhancing the beauty of this park.
History
In 1969 the idea was developed for establishing this park so as to preserve the site of these fossils. This site was constructed in 1974. Development of this site is the turning point in the history of the development of the Indian National Geological testimonials. This is also an effort leading to the awareness of the general people to know about the mysteries of the nature and science and the prosperous heritage. This park exhibits the life of various primitive animals that were living during the time that is about 1-2.5 millions of years ago

The main target for the establishment of this Shivalik Fossil Park was of preserving the site of fossils.
Collections and Exhibitions
There is the presence of about 6000 meters sequence of the layers of rocks in Shivalik hills and the oldest of them were developed at about 25 millions of years ago. These constitute the outer part of the Himalayas having a significant place in the man’s history of evolution. There are a number of evidences, geological pastel archaeological and anthropological that are sufficient to prove the early ancestors of men have been originated or lived here in this area. The Shivalik hills have played the significant role from the time since the men have reached down to the plains.
About 2 million years ago a large number of mammals of this area got extinct in the Pleistocene ice-age and the remaining one got migrated to some other areas.
All the animals of small size that has been exhibited in the Shivalik Fossil park of Saketi are also exhibited in Shimla in the museum.
How to Reach
This park in Saketi is situated in the range of Shivalik Hills in the valley of Markanda in the district of Sirmaur of Himanchal Pradesh. This park is about 22 Km away from Nahan. For reaching this park it is necessary to cross the bridge of Markanda and the distance of 12 km. The roads that are approaching to this park are in bad condition and this is because of the reason that these roads are passing through the land of the villagers and they do not want that proper roads will be constructed through their land.
