Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial
SardarVallabhbhai Patel known as the Iron man of the country, because of his committed and firm action in consolidating India after Independence, by merging all the princely states into the Indian dominion, is honoured by the memorial called Sardarvallabhbhai National Memorial, housed at a place of monumental importance, MotiShahiMahal.
Around this memorial building a garden had been developed which is huge and hosting a number of species, which include Peacocks and Monkeys.
There is a statue of Sardar Patel at the entrance and a number of portraits, pictures, photographs, biographical descriptions, , clippings from newspapers, political cartoons, relics, quotes from people who knew him and personal possessions relating to Sardar Patel are exhibited in the ground floor of the museum.
A room in the first floor is kept as a memorial for Rabindranath Tagore who stayed in that room , which exhibits a few of his portraits, his writings and his large statue.
History
MotiShahiMahal was raised by Shahjahan, the Mughal emperor, in the seventeenth century and it is a beautiful location fully surrounded by greenery. This building in Shahibaug area of Ahmedabad was constructed during 1618 and 1622, when Shahjahan was the Governor of Gujarat under Mughal empire and his name was Khurram then.
The place where the museum is housed now, was the residence of famous Rabindranath Tagore for sometime, during which period he wrote his piece The Hungry Stone. When India got the Independence, this place was the Raj Bhavan, being Gujarat Governor’s official residence. It was on March 7, 1980, that this Building was made a memorial for SardarVallabhbhai Patel and as a museum.
Different Sections of the Museum
The memorial for SardarVallabhbhaiPatel is housed in the ground floor of the building, which has a central hall and rooms in the sides. The central hall is adorned with portraits of Sardar Patel and his family members, besides that of his friends and those who participated in the freedom struggle of the country. These pictures and portraits are arranged chronologically, each of them having a brief description and everyone who goes through this gallery is stuck with awe and reverence.
One of the side rooms the personal effects of Sardarji are displayed, which include his KhadiKurta, dhoti, Jacket, slippers, shoes, etc besides his European style costumes.
There is a room allotted for the exhibits relating to Mahatma Gandhi in this memorial building, which presents various photographs, protraits, bust size statues of Mahatmaji in an orderly fashion.
The first floor of the building accommodates the Museum on Tagore, in memory of his stay in this very building where he also created a wonderful piece of literature.
How to Reach
The city of Ahmedabad can be reached by air, rail and road. Ahmedabad International Airport has flight schedules to all major destinations in India and abroad. Ahmedabad Railway Station is a busy Railway junction with fast moving trains connecting all destinations in India. With regard to Road transport it is linked to National Highway No. 8 facilitating one to reach Mumbai in 6 hours time
Timings and Ticket Prices
The memorial is Open for public throughout the year between 9:00am and 6:00pm, with the exception of Sundays and Public Holidays.
There is no entrance fee for visiting this memorial.
