Sanskar Kendra

Ahmedabad City in Gujarat State has a number of tourism spots, among which museums take an important position. Sanskar Kendra is one of the museums in this city established by  Le Corbusier, a well-known  French architect. This museum has to its credit a good number of collections of works of art and culture, also depicting the architectural treasure of Ahmedabad.

This museum is situated at a spot closer to Paldi and at the western end of Sardar Bridge.

History

The Sanskar Kendra building  was constructed with an intention of making it acultural centre by Le Corbusier in 1954. However, due to lack of proper maintenance and also the premises becoming a commercial spot in course of time, the original aim of making it a cultural centre was almost forgotten. VastuShilpa Foundation took initiative by making a proposal to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to permit them to revitalise the centre and make it reflect Ahmedabad’s cultural heritage. The Municipal corporation agreed  tochange the location to a City Museum nurturing cultural prestige of Ahmedabad, restoring its  values.

he museum was then made a section of a large complex of Ahmedabad  established as a cultural centre, having individual parts for covering subjects such as  anthropology, archaeology,natural history,  monumental sculptures, folklores in open air, depots and workshops. However, only the Museum was formed ultimately and other sections were not completed.

Collections& Exhibitions

Sansar Kendra has a number of items which depict Ahmedabad’s culture and tradition, which include pictures and photographs showing

• the history of the city, its heritage and the enthusiastic citizens
• Mahatma Gandhi’s visits to Ahmedabad on various occasions
• Incidents relating to Freedom movement, particularly connected with Ahmedabad
• Different ethnic groups of Ahmedabad, their religious practices and festivals
• Variety of  Photography depicting the art part of it

Sanskar Kendra also covers an impressive Kite Museum created by Bhanu Shah which has stored different types of kites. These were collected by Bhanu Shah with commitment and devotion from his age of 21.Added to the original collection, there are  now wide varieties of kites, some of which are made out of 400 paper pieces. Rare kind of  kites collected over a period of 50 years are stored in this museum exciting Kite lovers with large varieties of Kites.

How to Reach

Ahmedabad can be reached by air, rail and road.  Ahmedabad International Airport has  flight schedules to all major destinations in India and abroad.  Ahmedabad Railway Station is a busy Railway junction with fast moving trains connecting all destinations in India.  With regard to Road transport  it is linked to  National Highway No. 8 facilitating one to reach Mumbai in 6 hours time.

Timings and Ticket Prices

The museum  is open for public  from Tuesday to Sunday every week and the working hours are from 10 am to 8.00 pm. It observes holiday on Mondays and National Holidays.
