Regional Railway Museum
The Railway Museum at Chennai is the Regional Railway Museum which was opened in 2002 at Perambur, in the Integral Coach Factory premises, to show case the Railway history in India and also to display the antiques and vintage coaches of Railways to enthuse the public.
The museum has good collection of Rail Engines which were manufactured and used during British raj period, some of them made by North British Locomotive Company, while vintage coaches of trains aged more than 100 years are kept on exhibition.
History
This Regional Railway museum was planned well and the Ministry of Railways started building this museum from 2001. It was in March 2002 the museum was inaugurated by the Railway Minister during that time Nitish Kumar. The museum is undergoing improvement every day since then, which includes construction of a joy ride train for the Children to learn the Railway History with entertainment.
The museum celebrated its 10th year of completion, when some more important plans of improvement have been announced.
Collections
The museum houses a number of interesting collections, which are exhibited both indoor and in the open space. There are indoor photo galleries exhibiting the initial days of Integral Coach Factory and many photographs of the Indian Railways progress events.
The museum also preserves the working scale model of trains and the artefacts relating to the Railways of British days are mentionable collections.
There is an exciting exhibit of the coach in which Nation’s father Mahatmaji travelled.
Exhibitions
In the open space part of the museum the Children’s park and the joy ride train are the major attractions.
Nearly 40 different types of trains are exhibited in the museum, which includesa 1895 model Fowler steam ploughing engine created by Sir John Fowler. This was mainly made for the need ofagricultural operations. Likewise, Double Decker coaches of 1860s are few other exciting exhibits one would enjoy seeing in the museum. There are also train and coach models, such as Inspection car coach RA 30 which was manufactured by Metropolitan Carriage and Finance Co. Ltd., equipment called Crane Hercules which was used during emergency times and some of the luxury train coaches. The visitor can entrain all these coaches and derive a sense of reality of those days.
Visitors are also shown a video covering Neal's ball token system a particular method by which signalling between trains were carried out those days.
How to Reach
Perambur, where the museum is situated is part of Chennai and is connected by train service from Chennai Central Station and apart from local trains all north bound trains stop here, except a few fast moving trains like Shadapti, Rajdhani or Duronto. Local transport by bus is very frequent, one can take a bus every five minutes to reach Perambur from any part of the City.
Chennai being the State Head Quarters of TamilnaduState, is well connected by rail and road, besides Internationally connected too by air.
Timings and Ticket Prices
The museum is open to public on all days of the week except Mondays, between 10 AM and 6 PM. There is an entry fee charged for visitors. There is also provision to purchase souvenirs and gifts to mark the visit at the Office next to the Indoor museum.
