Railway Museum Mysore
This museum of Railway in the Mysore is an open-air museum that shows the classic locomotives. This museum is located just on the opposite side of the institute of the Central food technology and research center on the Krishnaraja Sagar Road. This gallery shows the growth time of railways through the paintings, photographs, and locomotives. There is also display of lights and railway signals. For children, there is also a mini train that is battery operated and children enjoyed a small ride on this train.
History
Indian Railways in year 1979 built this railway museum, which is the first one and the second railway museum is the National railway museum located in the Delhi. Royal carriages of the Mysore Maharaja also displayed as a treasure in this museum of railway in Mysore.
Collections
Two royal coaches of Mysore Maharaja is the main attraction of this museum that shows in Sri Ranga Pavilion. Other attraction is the carriage that included a dining car unit, kitchen, and a royal toilet from the past year 1899. This carriage is named as ‘Maharani’s saloon’ and also a E class engine of 1920 model is also displayed along with Austin rail motor.
Growth of the Indian railway is also shown in the form of black and white pictures that were displayed in the Chamundi Gallery that is the main attraction of this Mysore Railway Museum. Also there is a display of signals accessories from the past history of railways and first steam engine in this gallery. Also in this gallery, 1885 model crane that is hand operated and 1934 steam water pump is also displayed. For the entertainment of the children, there is a mini train that provide a entertaining ride to the children and this mini train is battery operated.
Exhibits
- Just at the entrance, the first locomotive named ES 506 4-6-2 is displayed.
- Rail motor car of Austin.
- Various cars for inspection. One of the inspection car is served as a ticket office.
- Belonging to the Maharaja of Mysore, there were 2 royal coaches.
- One of the carriage had dining car unit, royal toilet of year 1899, and a kitchen and the carriage is named as Maharani Saloon carriage.
- For Khushalgarh Kohat in year 1900, a military frontier A W.G. #1625 Bagnall for Thal Railway was moved to the North West Railways. This was moved to the Creosoting plant of Dhilwan before operated in the Depot of the Timber in Marala. Configuration of this 2'-6" gauge locomotive is about 2-4-2ST.
- In year 1920, North British company of SIR locomotives built the class E #37244 4-4-4T. This locomotive was a superheated and named as # 8 out of three.
- In year 1932 W.G. Bagnall built the class TS/1 #37338 2-6-2T from the SR for the state railways of Mysore.
- In year 1963, Telco made the A YP #2511.
How to Reach
Just opposite toward the CFTRI entrance, this railway museum is located on KIRS Road. From the city center, it is about 3 kms far. One can take the bus to reach this museum from the city bus stand of the Mysore.
By Road
From the South-West side of the Bangalore, about 139 kms is Mysore. This city is connected by the state highway that is very well managed. It will take about 3 hrs to reach the Mysore from Bangalore with a very great experience. To reach the Mysore, the fast bus service is provided by the Transport Corporation of the Karnataka.
By Train
One can reach the Mysore from Bangalore with train. To reach the Mysore, Bangalore is the via route that is very comfortable.
By Air
Bangalore airport is the nearest one to reach the Mysore. From all other cities, domestic flights were there to reach the Mysore. There were some international flights also for Bangalore.
