National Institute Of Sports Patiala
This National institute of sports situated in Patiala is being considered as the “Mecca” for the sports of India as a number of coaches has been produced by this instituted who by their skills and expertise have contributed to the creation of a number of national teams that can play for the number of International competitions.
The total area of this institute is about 268 acres. There are massive facilities in this institute for executing various academic programs and the training for sports. There is also the provision of 4 hostels for the residence facility of the students, coaches as well as the national players. There are about 115 rooms in this institute that embodies the library, museum, class rooms, staff club and office. In the green belt of this institute there is also a guest house having lounge along with the conference hall. There is the provision of the sports medicine department that is for providing the medical support to the players, staff snd students. The training facilities of this institute follows the international standards that embodies swimming pool, Gymnasium, Indoor Halls, Cycling Velodrome, Squash Courts, Athletic Track conditioning units and the out door Court. For the purpose of the players recovery there is also the provision for the steam bath, sauna bath and facilities of Hydrotherapy as well.
History
This institute of sports of Patiala is one of the largest sports institutes of Asia that has been housed withing the splendid monumental building having beautiful lawns that were established by the previous Maharaja’s of Patiala whose successors devoted this institute for the training and development of sports to the Indian people. This sports institute is situated in the Palace of the Maharaj of Patiala and this institute is now considered by the sports authority of India as its Academic wing. The Government of India established this institute on May 7th in 1961 for the purpose of development of sports in India on scientific lines and to provide the training to the coaches in various discipline of sports. Finally on January 23rd of 1973 the name of this institute was changed to Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS).
Collections
There are number of sport memorabilia such as hass that is the exrcise disc of doughnut shape having weight of about 95 KG. This disc was previously used for squats by Great Gama. The gold medal of Major Dhyan Singh that he got from Amsterdam Olympics in 1928 and the shoes of PT Usha of Seoul siad in 1986 are also exhibited in the sports museum. Within the exhibition center of this museum there are only some photographs, some sports kits of sportsmen and medals. This museum is situated on the surroundings of the Palace of Moti Bagh.
