Gass Forest Museum Coimbatore

This Forest Museum is the museum of natural history that is being governed by the government and is located in Coimbatore city of the Tamil Nadu state of India.

History

By the ending of the Nineteenth century an unsuccessful attempt was done by J.A. Gamble who was appointed as the Madras Presidency’s forest conservator for the establishment of the forest museum in this province. Later on in 1902 the successor of Gamble named as Horace Arichibald Gass got success in establishing the forestry museum. The Governor of Madras named Baron Amphtill inaugurated it and make it open for people on April 15th of 1902. It was opened to the public 15 April 1902 by Baron Ampthill, the then Governor of Madras. The first Guardian named Gass got retired in 1905 than his successor named F.A.Lodge changed the name of this museum to honor him. The expansion of this museum took place in 1905; 1915. For the purpose of giving training to the foresters the forestry college of Madras was built in this museum that is currently known as Forest Academy of Tamil Nadu. During the period of World War II at about the period 1942-47 this museum remained closed with the reason of providing shelters to the evacuees of Greece and Malta. After Independence of India in 1947 this museum comes under the control of the government of Tamil Nadu. At present this museum is being managed and controlled by the Institute for Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB). This institute is located in the campus of the museum.

Collections and Exhibitions

All the exhibits that have been arranged for the exhibition are really appealing to the eye. The two floors of this museum ground floor and the first floor as well have been filled by a variety of exhibits like animals, stuffed birds, plants, reptiles, variety of the samples of skeletons, weapons, tree wood, wooden houses models, uniforms of the forest ranger and much more that can be available in forest. By this museum is can be easily understand that this museum was established as a result of enthusiasm of HA Gass who was English man at about 1905. Out of all maximum exhibits are from the exhibits that were collected by him previously. A large number of those collections were lost during the phase of the 2nd world war. However as the time goes on the collections got increased day by day. The hunt weapons have been displayed by the side of everything else.

At about 65 millions of years ago a very large asteroid of about trillion tons smashed into the earth and the force was so strong that was about billion of times strong than the little boy of Hiroshima. That asteroid washed near about half of the species that were living on the earth at that time like dinosaurs. Only the report of the survival of snail shell is evident so as to tell about the tale of the Coimbatoreans. That was placed between the snakes place on bottles and the rosewood cross section that is about 450 years old. An inconsequential spot is being occupied by this specimen in the glass case situated on the Museum’s floor. Near about ten thousand artefacts of such type are currently present in this museum.

The timings of this museum are from 9 am - 1 pm ; 1:30 pm - 5 pm

This museum remains closed on Saturdays , Sundays and all the public holidays.
