Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya Ahmedabad
The Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya also known as Gandhi Memorial Institution is the public institution of services and as well as the museum that has been preserved for the dedication and the commemoration of the life history of the great Indian Leader Mahatma Gandhi. This museum is situated in the State of Gujarat in Ahmadabad and also in West Bengal state of India. In Ahmadabad this museum is situated on the bank of the river Sabarmati that was designed in 1964 by the famous architect named Charles Correa.
History
In 151 the public trust was established that governs and run this museum. In 1963 the new premises of this museum was constructed. This museum exhibits the view on portray and the life history of Gnadhi ji. There are number of manuscripts, books and photocopies also showing the correspondence of Gandhi ji, various photographs of Mahatma Gandhi along with his wife named Kasturba Gandhi and also with other members of the Ashram. The spinning wheel, oil painting of this life and the desk of Mahatma Gandhi which was used for his writings is also present here.
Mission
The main objective of this museum is to get the collections of all the things that falls light on the life history of Mahatma Gandhi and his memories.
Collections and Exhibitions
Gandhi in Ahmedabad Gallery
There are about 50 panel that are hand drawn present in this gallery that shows a number of events that had occurred in the life of Mahatma Gandhi when he was living in Ahmedabad around the period of 1915-1930. Among all the above said events the most famous events are the construction of the Kochrab Ashram, Champaran movement, Gujarat Vidhyapeeth establishment, dispute of the owner and workers of mill, Dandi march etc.
The exhibitions of all the above events has been displayed in the form of question and answers in the chronological way that make the people understand better about the Satyagraha movement of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Painting gallery
This painting gallery embodies mainly 8 paintings that are exhibiting the various poses of Mahatma Gandhi in various movements like marching, spinning clothes, meditating etc. In 1960 the above said paintings were painted by the two famous textile merchants and artists too named as Hiralal Khatir and Chandulal Shah. Later on these painting of both these merchants were donated by them to the ashram where these are displayed at present in the gallery.
A remarkable portrait of Mahatma Gandhi was made by Shri Rajkishore Kapoor is also present in this gallery. The features that made this portrait of Mahatma Gandhi remarkable is that this was made by the composition of peanut shells/ground nut that were made heated on different temperatures that leads to the creation of detailed version of Mahatma Gandhi.
My Life is my Message Gallery
When Gandhi Ji visited Bengal he was asked to give the message for the people of India. For this he said “My message is my life”. The gallery of “My Life is my Message” is basically developed to narrate the life history of Mahatma Gandhi that is really very inspiring. The purpose of this gallery has been achieved through the exhibition of about 250 photographs that are displayed in 7 parts covering the whole life of Mahatma Gandhi right from his birth in 1869 at Porbandar, part of life spent in England, the role that was played by him in the struggle movement of south African Indians as well as the crucial role that was played by him during the struggle for freedom of India and at last his heartbreaking murder in1948 in Delhi. All the photographs of Mahatma Gandhi are accompanied by the quotes that were taken from the original text so as to make the common people to understand better the life history deeply and the struggles of Mahatma Gandhi.
