Forest Research Institute Dehradun
This Forest Research Institute of Dehradun is under the charge of Indian Institute of Forest Research and Education (ICFRE). The building of this institute is inaugurated in 1929 with an architectural style of Greek Roman and is considered as the National Heritage. The history of this institute shows the development and evolution of the forest in all over the continent along with India.
History
All over the subcontinent, the development and evolution of the history of this institute is identical. This institute of Forestry is spread over the area of about 450 hectares with a lush green land and building is made in the architectural style of Greek and Roman with a impressive structure. This institute of research has various branches along with the laboratories in the 2.5 plinth area, printing press, experimental fields for research, library, arboreta, and herbarium etc that were considered to be unique in all over the world. In this Forest Research Institute, the main attraction is the museum that has huge collection of valuable sources of science and its information.
Mission and Objectives
The main objective of this Institute is fulfill the needs of the research in the plains of Indo-Gangetic like cities Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Himalayas etc. At FRI, the branch of Forestry Research is divided into the 14 sub divisions.
Collections
The Timber Museum
This museum contained the latest and best woods on a commercial basis. This museum contained the samples of about 126 species of commercial wood including their characteristics displayed on the museum wall that attracts the visitors. To improve the timber characters, the linseed oil is used to oil the upper half and lower half have been left as it is in its natural position. The small maps and photographs of the trees were displayed to show their distribution in all over the India above the hanging planks. A structure of Indian wood can be shown under the microscope in a form of photomicrographs that are transparent in a different case.
The Silviculture Museum
There is a system related to the management of forests that can be displayed as a photographs and models in the museum of Silviculture. To the regeneration and felling of the forest, there were models displayed in a series that is the main part of this exhibition.
Forest Pathology Museum
This museum includes the variety of about exhibits that are 900 to show the decay of timber along with the diseases of trees caused economically. These exhibits are divided into the 2 groups named as conifers and hardwood.
Non Wood Forest Products
This museum shows exhibits with comparison of both latest developed rill method technique for resin tapping and conventional technique of resin tapping.
Social Forestry Museum
To the show the environmental effect on the economy and productivity of village without or with trees is the main target of this museum. The forest products, their effects, growth effect on the fuelwood and fodder were shown through models and photographs. To know about the protective features for plants, planting stocks, and planting techniques, there were models displayed in this museum. To provide the knowledge about the proper use of fuelwood, various models of chulhas that are smokeless were shown in this museum. To provide the knowledge about the role of forest giving employment and establishment of cottage industry for the people having no land, many exhibits were demonstrated in this museum.
Entomology Museum
To show the insect pest stages, damage caused to seed by them, to felled timbers, bamboos, finished products, seedlings, and standing trees, the exhibits contained totally 3000 in number in this museum.
How to Reach
By Road
To reach the Dehradun, one can take the service of bus or taxi as this is in well connection with the other cities of India. Two bus services were provided in Dehradun that are semi-deluxe and deluxe that were moved between the Mussoorie, Delhi, Shimla, and Dehradun.
By Train
Dehradun city is well connected with the other major cities in India and has a railway station of North zone.
By Air
At about 25 km from city of Dehradun, the main airport is of Jolly Grant airport and also has connection with the Delhi airport. Both these two airports are well connected with the flights of MDLR, Deccan, and Kingfisher.
