Chitrakala Parishath
Chitrakala Parishath is an eternal congregation for culture and art established at Bengaluru. It endeavours to promote art in every form, through permanently displayed artefacts and records, at the same time organising on and again exhibitions of art and culture at its premises.
History
Like an ocean is congregation of a number of rivers,Chitrakalaparishath formed itself into a great art centre through the combination of a few initiatives, such as the following:
It was during 1950s at the initiative of the Russian Painter Dr.Svetoslav Roerich that the Parishath started its mission. With Dr. Roerich’s paintings and also that of his father Nicholas Roerich, the Parishathconducted art exhibitions at different centres of Karnataka region, also arranged workshops and conferences on art and culture throughout India. This was financially supported by the Karnataka Government.
- ChitrakalaVidyalaya of NanjundaRao which got included to ChitrakalaParishath in theyear 1964. This Vidyalaya was an art school at Malleswaram conducted in a small room, teaching applied art, art history, sculpture art, painting etc leading to degree of Bachelor of Arts. This centre got extended in 13 acre wide premises granted by Karnataka Government, to conduct PG level programmes in art.
- Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage , INTACH centre initiated by the Parishath in 1993, which focusses on restoration and rebuilding of material of heritage, including ancient buildings, artwork, paintings, manuscripts etc.
- Kejirwal’s family collection of art products which are displayed in Parishath
- The Sculpture Gallery which was added in the year 1998-99 in the Parishath premises
- An open air theatre and two other galleries to present folk arts and international art established in 2003
The Parishath is also known for its annual event called ChitraSanthe, which means Art market, when art works in large number created by hundreds of artists will be on sale. This event is
The INTACH part of the Parishath has comprehensive objectives relating to art and culture to protect cultural legacy of India.
Collections
Besides the paintings of Kejriwaland Roerich families, the Parishath has large number of art work collections which are on display.
The Parishath also publishes books relating to art and culture among which the one on Mysore Paintings with its version of Kannada translation is worth mentioning.
Exhibitions
The Parishath campus is accommodating quite a few galleries of paintings and art works, besides a stone temple installed in the premises for the visitors to enjoy its art work and has many art related documents open for public to through such as
- Svetoslav Roerich’s illustrated album
- The catalogue of movement in Indian Art
- NanjundaRao Felicitation album
- Leather Puppetry volume.
Among all these, the paintings of Roerich family and Kejriwal family are real treasures of art, which every visitor must see and enjoy.
How to Reach
The Karnataka ChitrakalaParishath is in a prominent location at Kumara Krupa Road of Bengaluru, near Ashoka Hotel, which one can easily reach by taking public transport, taxi or auto.
Bangalore is well connected by air, rail and road. Bangalore International Airport having flight schedules to all the important destinations of the world reaching Bangalore by air is very easy. Likewise, Bangalore Rail junction is well connected with all the important destinations of the country making rail travel also easy. There are long distance buses to Bangalore for all state head quarters of the neighbouring States, which include Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Hyderabad .
