Lila Gumbaj Ki Masjid Champaner

The sacred Islamic mosque Lila Gumbaj ki Masjid is situated at Champaner town in the state of Gujarat, India. The mosque comes under the 114 listed monuments of Baroda heritage organization that are also a part of archaeological park of Champaner-Pavagadh. It is also a heritage place of UNESCO and situated close to east gate of old town. This sacred Islamic mosque was constructed during 15th century by Muslim rulers of India. The mosque has total three domes and one Minar. It is not only an Islamic worship place but it also a fine example of Indo-Islamic architecture. Visitors or devotees from all over the country visit at Lila Gumbaj ki Masjid every year.

History

However, there is no proper evidence regarding the construction date of this mosque but as per the archaeological department of India, it was constructed during 15th of century by the then Muslim rulers. Moreover, it is a known fact that mosques constructed in India during Muslims rulers are the fine examples of Islamic architecture. However, Lila Gumbaj ki Masjid or mosque is a blend of Indian and Islamic style of architecture that cannot be seen elsewhere in Gujarat state. However, due to its religious significances, this sacred Mosque is prohibited for the non-Muslim visitors during Ramadan.

Architecture

The renowned Lila Gumbaj ki Masjid or mosque is constructed on a great plinth and has an important frontage along with arched entrance just at the centre that flanked by two important lateral arches. However, currently, three entrances are found on south, north and east directions. There are also minarets greatly fashioned along with horizontal Islamic cornices, decorated niches and mouldings. There are basically three domes are found and the central dome has a colourful fluted design. Apart from that on northern eastern corner of the mosque has a rectangular tank along with very deep drain just in front.

By Air

Vadodara airport is the nearest airport that connects town to all other major cities of the country. Hence, visitors or devotees can get direct flights to Vadodara airport from various domestic airports in the country.

By Rail

Champaner town is well connected with all other neighbouring towns or cities of the state by Indian railway networks. Some of the nearest railway stations are Champaner junior railway station only 17km, Bakrol railway station 18 km and Lotana railway station 19 km distance from mosque.

By Road

The town of Champaner is also well linked with other parts of the state by roads. Hence, visitors can easily get road-transportation such as buses, cars and taxis across the city.
