Introduction to Meghalaya:

Meghalaya got formed as an independent State contained by the State of Assam as on 2 April 1970. In the year 1972 State of Meghalaya came into existence on 21 January. It is in the midst of Assam and Bangladesh. The meaning of the name Meghalaya is "the Home of Clouds” and it is a mountainous state. It is subjugated by the tribal communities Khasis, the Jaintias and the Garos. The Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills form the middle and eastern part of Meghalaya. It is in the east side of India covering 300 km in length and 100 km width hill strip, with a complete region up to 8,700 sq meters. About one third of the state is dense forest. The forests of Meghalaya are known for their flora and fauna.

The total population of the state is 29.64,007 and the climate of Meghalaya differs with the change in altitudes. The weather of Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills is exclusively agreeable and enjoyable. It is not very warm in summers not too cold in winters, but beyond the plains of Garo Hills, the weather is blistering and humid, except in winter. The sky in Meghalaya is at all times covered by clouds, really going by the name of Meghalaya (Megh - clouds; Alaya - home of).

History of Meghalaya:

Meghalaya became an independent state on 21 January 1972, when it was carved out from two districts of the state of Assam - the United Khasi, Jaintia and Garo hills.
Before becoming a state, Meghalaya was in partially- independent status in 1970.

The Jaintia, Khasi and Garo tribes had the kingdoms of their own, till these were brought came below the British realm in the 19th century. Later, the British got Meghalaya under Assam in 1835. Once Bengal was parted on 16 October, 1905 by Lord Curzon, Meghalaya came to be a part of the novel region of 'Eastern Bengal and Assam'. But, as the divider was upturned in 1912, Meghalaya came to be a fraction of the region of Assam.

Economic Information and Population of Meghalaya:

Meghalaya has a diverse population of tribals from Khasis and Garos who dominate the area. The other groups are Jaintias, the Koch, the related Rajbongshi, the Boro, Hajong, Dimasa, Hmar, Kuki, Lakhar, Mikir, Rabha and Nepali. The main occupation of the population is cattle rearing and agriculture.

Culture of Meghalaya:

The culture of Meghalaya is much different from the other cultures followed in India. The main tribes of Meghalaya like Khasis, Jaintis and Garos follow the tradition of matrilineal system that is the lineage or inheritance goes to the last or the youngest daughter inherits the property and is the caretaker of her parents and other dependant siblings in the family. In this state alone parents show least interst in bearing a male child the count shows 73%. Christianity is majorly followed and following this is Hinduism, Muslim and animist.

There are various dance forms in Meghalaya like:Wangala, Shad Suk Mynsiem, Behdienkhlam and Nongkrem. Weaving is the ancient craft of the state. The Khasis are famous for weaving cane mat, baskets and stools. Khasis create handicraft of a unique sort made of wicker rug called 'Tlieng', that assures a first-class usefulness for more than 20-30 years.
Garos intertwine the fabric worn for Garo clothes known as 'Dakmanda'.

The main food for Khasis is varities of rice and Pork. This north eastern region fundamentally holds dishes of non vegetarians as its staple food. A distinctive Garo food is made of more than one meat/fish serving dishes and the most wanted the relishing dry fish soup with rice.

Meghalaya is a hilly Indian state. It was a part of Assam before 21st January, 1972 but later on became an independent state. Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya.
