Meghalaya got formed as an independent State contained by the State of Assam as on 2 April 1970. In the year 1972 State of Meghalaya came into existence on 21 January. It is in the midst of Assam and Bangladesh. The meaning of the name Meghalaya is "the Home of Clouds” and it is a mountainous state. It is subjugated by the tribal communities Khasis, the Jaintias and the Garos. The Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills form the middle and eastern part of Meghalaya. It is in the east side of India covering 300 km in length and 100 km width hill strip, with a complete region up to 8,700 sq meters. About one third of the state is dense forest. The forests of Meghalaya are known for their flora and fauna. The total population of the state is 29.64,007 and the climate of Meghalaya differs with the change in altitudes. The weather of Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills is exclusively agreeable and enjoyable. It is not very warm in summers not too cold in winters, but beyond the plains of Garo Hills, the weather is blistering and humid, except in winter. The sky in Meghalaya is at all times covered by clouds, really going by the name of Meghalaya (Megh - clouds; Alaya - home of). Meghalaya is a hilly Indian state. It was a part of Assam before 21st January, 1972 but later on became an independent state. Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya. The stae has agriculture as a predominant occupation of its people. The crops that are largely grown there include potato, rice, maize, banana, pineapple, etc. Real Estate companies and Insurance companies form the service sector of the state. Shillong is a very popular hill station of the state where there are many waterfalls. The shillong peak, which is the highest peak there is very suitable for the trekking, also called ‘abode of the gods’
