Manipur has been known by different names in the past before getting the name Manipur. Like Mitei-Leipak, Poirei-Lam, Tilli-Koktong,Meitrabak,Sanna-Leipak,or Manipur as known recently. Manipur exactly corresponds to “a bejewelled area” and Manipur had been explained our first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as the  as the “gem of India”

Kangla, Yumphal or Imphal as it was called long back is the capital of Manipur as of today.The overall inhabitants of Manipur are 23, 88,634 of which 11, 81,296 are women where as 12, 07,338 are males. Approximately 60% of the inhabitants live in the basin area even as the remaining live in the mountainous regions of the state. The state populace is a mixture of non tribal and tribal persons. The ancestral people mostly dwell in the mountainous regions and the basin has a intense populace of non tribal people.

The overall region occupied by the Manipur is 22327 sq. km and it is bordered on the North by Nagaland, towards south is Mizoram ,towards the west is and in the east falls Myanmar.

Manipur is blessed with a clean climate round the year. It has two main seasons separated by two transitions: the winter season and the monsoon season. The winter season is from December to February. Then is the Pre-Monsoon season in the months of March and April. Then the monsoon season is there from the month of May to September, and the last is the Post-Monsoon season in the month of October and November.

History of Manipur

Manipur was under the control of the British Empire as a princely state 1891. When India got Independence in 1947, the Manipur Constitution Act 1947 was rendered with which Manipur had its own democratic government with the then Maharaja as an executive leader and an elected legislature too. On 15 October 1949 Manipur was merged into Indian Union and on 21st January 1972 it became a full fledged state of India.
