Among the districts of Maharashtra in the northern part of the state lies Thane district. The headquarters of Thane district is located in Thane city. The city is also called Tannah.

Four major periods have ruled Thane. Firstly, the ancient period of the early Hindus, the Muslim period from 1300 to 1660 AD, from 1660 AD to 1800 AD ruled by the Maratha ruler and finally by the British ruler from 1880 till independence. During British time, they made it the district headquarters.

The district covers an entire area of 9,558 kilometer square. The chief crops which are grown in the district include nachani, vari and rice, with the later one being the most essential crop of Thane district. Besides this, a lot of people also work in industries as it is the third biggest industrialized district in Maharashtra.
