Few years after India gained freedom from British colonial rule, MP state was reorganized. Panna became new district of MP in 1950 by including former British territories - the princely states. Princely states Panna, Jaso and big portion of Ajaigarh were added in it besides Paldeo to create Panna district. By 1956 MP became large reorganized state of central India. Present day Panna district has 7,135 sq km area.

Geographical importance of Panna is equally important. Famous Ken River passes from it. Beauty of this district is manifold through Gatha Falls, so is noticed the naturalness from Panna National Park. These locations make Panna most admired tourist attraction in MP.

All five subdivisions of Panna district Ajaigarh, Gunour, Panna, Pawai and Shahnagar have best means to keep inhabitants prosperous. Primarily agrarian divisions they are self-sufficient too. This district had recorded total population of 854,235 (according to 2001 census). The population of males, recorded by this census, was 447,923 whereas it had 406,312 females. Its sex ratio was recorded at 907 females per 1000 males.

One important feature that keeps Panna district ahead from rest is its diamond mines. These are the active mines renowned in the whole Asian region.
