As part of Malwa region, Mandsaur shares the border with Neemuch district in north and neighboring state Rajasthan surrounds it from east and west. Ratlam district shares border with Mandsaur from southern portion. It comes under Ujjain Division of MP state.

Although this district is of average size like other MP districts its area extends to approximately 142 km from north to south and 124 km from east to west with a total area comprising of 5521 km². The 2001 census had recorded total population of Mandsaur at 1183274 out of which Scheduled Castes are 212262 and 37526 people comprised of Scheduled Tribes.  

Headquarters of Mandsaur, town of Mandsaur has historical connotation as its name is concerned. It has been derived from Marhsaur from Marh and Saur. The district with four Sub Divisions and eight tehsils is known in the region for its famous religious and historical sites. Renowned Lord Pashupatinath temple is the big religious landmark here which turns it famous locally and nationally.
