With total area of 8771 km², Mandla district accommodates nine blocks, four tehsils and 1214 villages in which total population 779,414 (according to 2001 census) inhabit. It is one of the few tribal districts in MP where population of adivasis and Gonds are high. The district is part of Mahakoshal region. The Narmada River basin covers most portions of this district. Natural scenery and high forestation makes Mandla rich in greenery and environment friendly. Larger part of this district is too much forested.

Places of attraction are Kanha National Park which is famous Project Tiger sanctuary in Mandla district. This park accommodates largest number of tigers in the whole country. Smooth functioning and best management of this park paved the way for winning several national awards. Level of infrastructure is unequal. Other important attraction is Mandla Plant Fossils National Park which is worth viewing.

Administrative headquarters of Mandla District is in Mandla town from where district administration monitors all four tehsils. The district accommodates twelve assembly constituencies and Mandla Lok Sabha constituency. It is an integral part of Jabalpur Division of MP whose literacy rate is 59.85% but the sex ratio is impressively 1002 females per 1000 males.
