Summary: Situated in the western region of Madhya Pradesh (MP) Jhabua distinguishes itself as a fast growing district in the central India whose administrative headquarters are in the developing Jhabua town.

Jhabua district located in western part of MP remains in limelight for known reasons. Gujarat districts Panchmahal and Baroda and Banswara of Rajasthan, Alirajpur, Dhar and Ratlam of MP borders Jhabua. Its total area is 3,782 sq km. All five tehsils and six blocks are dominated by tribal population. It was bifurcated in 2008 to create Alirajpur district carved from it.

The census report of 2001 records total population of Jhabua district, post the creation of Alirajpur, at 784,286. As 91% of population is rural this district has agrarian dominance. With majority population consisting of 85.60% tribal and 3% scheduled castes it is primarily a tribal district. Being highly drought-prone with degraded waste lands makes Jhabua a poor district.

Jhabua is though culturally enriched which depict from the dressing sense of women using ethnic items such as products designed from bamboo. They like to wear heavy jewelry and their male counterparts use bow and arrow which is much part of tradition since centuries. The predominantly tribal district lags behind in the literacy and poverty is rampant here. Total literacy rate of 36.9% is a matter of concern for Jhabua which is also lowest rate in whole MP state.
