History of Madhya Pradesh (MP) is incomplete without Gwalior which is administrative headquarters of Gwalior district. The district has other towns and cities like Antari, Bilaua, Bhitarwar, Dabra, Pichhore Morar Cantonment and Tekanpur that make it fast growing and advanced district in MP. With its total area of 5,214 km² Gwalior district has population 1,629,881 (as per the 2001 census records). Other MP districts Gwalior, Datia, Shivpuri, Sheopur and Morena borders Gwalior district from northeast, east, south, southeast and northwest portions respectively. It is an integral part of Gwalior Division of MP.

Historical impact of Gwalior district is denoted with the 1857 revolt for India's independence that started from Gwalior. Heroic resistance of Rani Lakshmi Bai against British is known to all. Gwalior fort was used to shelter Lakshmibai on May 24, 1858 while she was determinedly fighting with the British. Such historical events remain imprint in the minds of visitors of this fort.
