Summary: As part of southern Jabalpur Division, Balaghat district identifies with the Satpura Range and the alluring valleys of Wainganga River which is its integral part and big landmark besides forests.

A prominent district in MP, Balaghat occupies an area of 9,245 km² and is surrounded in north by Mandla district, Dindori in northwest and Chhatisgarh's Rajnandgaon district in east. Gondiya and Bhandara districts of Maharashtra in south and Seoni district of MP borders its west. Hindi is main language of Balaghat but its close proximity to Maharashtra popularized Marathi in southern parts.

Wainganga River and its tributaries Bagh, Nahra and Uskal are noticeable. Administrative town Balaghat is located on its banks. Southern lowlands, hills, rivers and dense forests showcase geographical diversity. With eight development blocks Waraseoni, Balaghat, Katangi, Paraswada, Baihar, Khairlanji, Laanji and Kirnapur it has big administrative importance. 2001 Census records its population at 1,497,968 out of that 1,236,083 rural and 129,787 urban. The census records the Scheduled castes population of this district at 113,105 whereas the total number of Scheduled tribes is 298,665.

More than 50% area of the Balaghat district is covered with the dense forest which is another reason to make it environment friendly. Part of Kanha National Park houses here that has tiger, leopard, bear, nilgai, deer and gaurs. The district produces India's 80% manganese. Copper, bauxite, kyanite, and limestone are other minerals.
