Lakshadweep, also known by the natives as Laccadive Islands, is situated in the Laccadive Sea on the western coast of the state of Kerala. Out of the big group of Islands, only 10 are inhabited. Only few people know that these islands are the top portion of complete set of mountain range under the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. It has been believed that the inhabitants of these islands settled from the mainland of India.

Lakshadweep Islands are actually an archipelago of three reefs, twelve atolls and five submerged banks, totalling a massive group of thirty nine islands. As far as tourism is concerned, tourists visiting these islands need special permit and foreigners are not permitted entry to some islands. Drinking alcohol is strictly prohibited in this region.

The total land area covered by these islands is 32 sqkms, out of which the lagoon area is 4200 sqkms. The total of economic zone is 400,000 sqkms and rest covered by territorial waters. Agatti, a small island, is also the only airport from Lakshadweep to Kerala. Majority of people speak Malayalam, but Jaseri and Mahl, the language of the islands is also spoken.
