Mizoram Palak Dil
With many myths surrounding the history and the surreal beauty of the lake, it is also knows as Pala Tipo in the Mizo language called “Mara” the largest natural lake situated near “Phura” which is the southern part of the state. The Lake is oval in shape and not like that of regular conventional round shape which gives the beauty of the lake more of an unconventional look, this is one of the largest lake in Mizoram. The Length of the lake is 870 meters with a width of 700 metres and an intense depth of 17 to 25 meters. This lake is situated at Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) which is one of the three autonomous district council of Mizoram. It is about 76 km from Saiha the head quarter of MADC
History
Palak dil lake is very rich in terms of its resource in history, there are several myths , beliefs, and stories regarding the birth of this lake. The age old village myth says that the Lake is Haunted with spirits and demons , it is also believed that before the lake was formed there was a village situated at this place and a large snake lived in the vicinity of the village who regularly stole the villager’s stuffs, gradually it started stealing the small children as well . The villagers out og their rage killed the serpent and ripped it off into pieces and distributed all over to the villagers to cook and eat the snake’s meat as a notion of their victory . There are many aberrant story over this particular incident, it is said that a devilish incident happened while a widow and a mother of two got the head of the snake as her share , while she was cooking it in a pot , she found the eye ball of the snake glowing and staring straight at her from her cooking ! she was abashed and threw the cooking pot along with the serpent’s head in it, and it is said that the water level from the cooking pot suddenly started proliferating and it flooded the whole village penetrating deep inside and forming a huge Lake which is now known as Tamdil. while another legendary belief about this lake is there was once a British officer who once dropped his sword in the lake and asked one of his subordinates to fetch that back to him, the man went to the lake to retrieve the sword and to the british officer’s astonishment he came back after 3 days and explained him how he was feasted and forced to drunk in order to escape the lake.
Main Attraction
If you have an unquenchable thirst for adventure then this lake is a must visit for you. It intrigues scenery still untouched and unexplored by tourists, the Myanmar border encircling the lake is a dream for all the trekkers. A wide variety of wild life accumulation is also found in the remote area adjoining the Myanmar forest
most of the common wetland birds and hill birds are found captivated by the surreal beauty of the lake and settle down there, and is believed to be a favourite terminal for migrating Pintail Duck at winter while a few elephants still bum around the surrounding virgin forests.
How To Reach
The lake is located 4km away from the main city of Phura(Mizoram). You can get a regular sumo service from saiha to phura. Forest rest house is also available
